7 phantom articles on the left

Describe the bug
A problem I have every day is that when I did read all articles and no one is in the right pane anymore the categories pane on the left shows still an amount of unread articles. The number is in many cases 7.

To Reproduce
It's not to reproduce. It just happens.

You read articles by pressing "j" and "j" and "j" and when you read all and the right pane is empty, you have still 7 in the left pane. And these articles on the left are not new ones coming from background actualization or so, these are indeed phantom articles. When you click on "Alle" (All) you get nothing on the right side.

When you have these 7 and you press "r" it can happen that you get additional new articles, so you have then 13 or so. When you click on "Alle" (All) you get 6 in the right pane and you can read them one by one. When all are read you have again 7 on the left side.

What you can do as a workaround is "Mark all as read", this sets the counter back to 0.

Expected behavior
This should not happen at all.

Don't know if something has been changed but for a few days now I don't reach 7 anymore, but 6. So 6 is the new magic number :)

I haven't been able to reproduce this. When it happens, do you see an error in the console of the devtools of your browser? Does it go away after a page reload?

I have it everyday. Probably you need more of my usecase:

• a Windows machine (I guess it's much more frequent on Windows)
• Firefox
• a bunch of 50 feeds in 10 folders
• an ongoing cycle of automatic updates, reading, staying in background, automatic updates, reading ...

I have this browser open for 8 hours, and it shows commafeed all the time in a tab.

You never can predict it but somewhen (after an hour or so) it will happen.

New is the number of 6. I never had 7 anymore. There must have been a change which reduced this mysterious number by one.

No, I said already, it doesn't go away by page reload, you can press F5 or Ctrl-F5, doesn't matter. These phantom articles are more stable than thought. An interesting question would be if they are sharable between two browsers or even devices - didn't analyze this until now.

I'll check the browser console next time.

Yes, I lied frivolously. And now I am ashamed of my behavior.

Indeed I saw right now that an ordinary F5 solves this problem. All the phantom entries disappear then. But a simple click on "All" or also the 'r' key do not solve it.

I believe this issue occurs when entities are marked as read from a different device.

May be that this can also be a reason.

But in my case it happens with a single instance of commafeed on a single machine. And I don't have multiple browsers or tabs open. I have multiple machines only after each other, and there's a gap between (the gap between work and private live).

It happens by the way also in Linux. My guess was it a Windows problem. But no, over the weekend I was on Linux only. And it happened two times since Friday.

It seems that it is in the automatic algorithm which collects new articles. The situation is: I've read all articles and now the "All" list is empty. Then I let the page open so that it waits on new articles. After a period the page gets new articles AND THEN is the counter often 7 items too big. The counter says "15 new" and indeed I got only 8 new articles in my "All" list. A condition is probably that you have more than 7 new articles. If you have only 2 new ones it doesn't happen.

Update (2 days later): I confirm that. The additional items in the number come always by automatic updates in the background, never by user interaction (Refresh or r or a click onto "All").
